The file "DBA3 LIST DATASHEET TEMPLATE Jan16.xltx" you're compressing weights 38KB, not 38MB:

1 file, 37966 bytes (38 KiB)

You meant to make 20KB parts? The default unit is MB, you can specify the volume like this 20t (tera), 20g (giga), 20m (mega), 20k, 20b :keka:

so it is.... So it must have been Thunderfird giving me the whole problem. I tried sending an email with 4 attachments, and my IP said the message was too large, so I kept deleting one attachment after the other, trying to get it down to below about 36 (MB ???) -- and discovered that every iteration still was adding up to 104. So it must be a bug in Thunderbird.

A 74.8 MB file creates a message size of 102 MB.
"The size of the message you are trying to send exceeds the global size limit (36700160 bytes) of the server. The message was not sent; reduce the message size and try again."

Maybe try with Mail.app or any other. Long time since I don't touch Thunderbird.
